Music to Code By

Yesterday, it was Ministry. There's something about repetitive industrial white noise while you're working. It's like having noise-cancelling headphones: it blocks out all distractions without itself getting in the way:

Soon i discovered that this rock thing was true.
Jerry Lee Lewis was the devil.
Jesus was an architect previous to his career as a prophet.
All of a sudden, I found myself in love with the world;
So there was only one thing that I could do:
Was ding a ding dang my dang a long ling long.

Today, it's Tom Waits. I don't have as good an explanation for this, but that's alright: Waits is one of those people who just is, without needing explanation:

Will you sell me one of those if I shave my head?
Get me out of town is what fireball said.
Never trust a man in a blue trench coat,
Never drive a car when you're dead.

Back in Perth, it was The Chemical Brothers and The Prodigy; but hell, it was 1999 and we were young and carefree.

It has to be music without words for coding. Dub, Techno, House, Jazz.

How can anyone concentrate with someone prattling on about lost love in their ear??

D

I agree. I listen to vocal trance, which has at most heavily filtered vocals. DnB, Gothic Trance etc.

Blue Man Group. Grindy techno in languages I don't speak. Anything that will beep repetitively and not come into my brain in the form of words. And for days when I absolutely need 100 percent of my brain power, wordless ambient techno. It's smooth jazz for people who can't stand that crap.

What is about trance and code?
My theory is that trance induces a theta brain wave state, and this is conducive to coding and problem solving.

Trance:
LSG (Oliver Lieb)

Ambient Electronic:
Aphex Twin
Autechre
Astrobotnia
Pan American
Labradford

Ambient Gothic Death Metal:
Lustmord

+ Underworld

Trance is for coding, yes. I can also recommend the Spanish bagpiper Hevia (nothing at all like Scottish bagpipes, which is a Good Thing). David Hykes is for designing. He's brilliant for getting lost in your mind and coming back.

Ottmar Leibert - Neuvo Flamenco
Ganga Giri - Tribe Vibe
Afro-Celt Sound System - ??? Great stuff

No words in any of it. Nice beat and the songs are long enough.
