I just closed one bug... and then as a result of closing it, opened six new bugs. (Well, five real bugs, and one umbrella-bug to link them all to). Ever feel like you're digging a hole, and eventually it'll be too deep to climb out of?

In the last 6 months we've been tracking the number-of-bugs-opened-per-day, and the total number of bugs (we call them "Problem Reports", not bugs) as a key indicator of whether we're on track to make the next release or not. After a couple of iterations you get a feel for your teams "signature" on these charts, and you can say things like, "we're still finding too many bugs at the moment, we're going to end up delivering late".
Ah. That would be one of those "process" things that other projects seem to be allowed to have, but we're not.
When that's happening it doesn't feel like a hole to me. More like a tunnel that will end in - nirvana? (China?).
What's a bug?
